Document Archives

Unicoi County Clerk and Master Teresa Simerly and Register of Deeds Debbie Tittle, most recently attended the Tennessee Archives Institute in Nashville.

The Tennessee Archives Institute is a program providing training and continuing education for Tennessee’s local archivists. The participants are from archives, libraries, historical societies, and local governments from all over the state. The program runs on a three-year cycle of instruction (the curriculum changes each year). At the end of each year, participants receive a certificate of completion. Participants completing all three years of instruction receive certification as Archives Manager. Since its inaugural program in October 2000, 163 local records keepers have to participated in the Institute’s three-day regimen of courses and workshops, with 90 receiving certification from TSLA and the Secretary of State as Archives Managers. The Institute has been the sole venue of formal training for local archivists and records managers in Tennessee and is a popular and effective means of network-building.

For the past 4 years, partial funding for the Institute has been provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. This funding, along with the continued support on the part of the Secretary of State’s office, has allowed us (TSLA) to offer the Institute’s programs to archivists at an affordable cost. As the majority of the Institute’s participants are volunteers, they are often attending the Institute (and working in their local archive) at their own expense. These individuals are passionate about records preservation. They go above and beyond in their civic duty to make sure the public records of their county or city are properly maintained and open for public use. It’s our privilege to assist them with their efforts.

Tittle serves as chairman of the local Records Commission and Simerly as the county archivist.  Both ladies were most complimentary of the training they received and feel it will be a invaluable asset once the county archive and records management program is established.
